Prairie Color is a project born from our love for the outdoors, especially the rural and remote areas that surround us. Living in the heartland, we are constantly inspired by the prairie's beauty and variability. Through the seasonal changes and the extremes of abundant moisture and drought, we have witnessed nature's dynamic transformations.

For this project, we focused on Badlands National Park and the nearby Buffalo Grasslands. Despite its proximity to our home, we had never immersed ourselves in this area. This theme provided us with an exciting opportunity to explore it more deeply and appreciate its nuances more fully.
In the field, we worked as a team to scout and interpret various locations, seeking scenes that would resonate with our theme. We quickly realized that "color" encompasses more than just vegetation. The prairie's color palette is shaped by everything in view: grasses, trees, clouds, sky, towering pinnacles, and changing atmospheric conditions, all blending harmoniously to create a unique emotional experience at each location.

Our work hinged on the dynamic interplay of light. We delved into various times of the day and the nuances of lighting—backlighting, side light, muted light, and low-key lighting—to craft a portfolio that mirrors the prairie's diverse color spectrum.

The images we captured were brought to life through artistic segmentation and deliberate post-processing techniques. By enhancing color and adding visual depth, we aimed to convey the emotions we felt in each unique scene.
Working on Prairie Color deepened our understanding of the prairie in a truly palpable way. Our view of this landscape is forever changed, and we hope to share this enriched perspective through our images.
